The Dowry System is really a curse to our country. It is a blot on our society. Even it is a crime people give and take dowry. This usually happens in the villages. This system has the condition of women in India, very miserable. India can only progress if this system is abolished.
The dowry system is not new in India. It is a very old system. Nevertheless in olden days there was no compulsion of this, but today the marriage is not held until the girl’s parents don’t give dowry.
As a result of this system many young girls commit suicide. This system has made the life of young girls and also their parents miserable. The girl’s parents sometimes take debts to give dowry and remain in debts throughout their life. Brides who do not bring rich dowry from their houses are ill-treated. They are badly beaten, given divorce or sometimes killed.
The position of women in Indian society is gradually going down due to the dowry system. In olden days women were highly respected. Nevertheless now the position of women has declined due to dowry system. The dowry system is a menace that can’t be abolished by law and order and unless it is abolished India cannot progress fully.
