AKBAR-THE GREAT

We are all known to the Mughal dynasty. The Mughal set up a strong and powerful empire encompassing the whole of India. These were several rulers from Babar, the founder of the Mughal Empire to Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal Emperor. Nevertheless the mightiest, wisest and the most ambitious ruler among them was Akbar – The Great.
Akbar was born on 15th as the son of Humayun and Hamid Banu Begum who at that time were in exile, as Humayun was defeated by Sher Shah Suri and lost Delhi. He spent his childhood away from the comforts that a prince gets. Humayun reconquered Delhi in 1555when Islam Shah succeeded Sher Shah Suri.
Akbar succeeded his father on 14th February, 1556 when he was just 13 years old. Akbar’s first military conflict was with Hemu, a brave Hindu general of Adil Shah. The Mughal army under Bairam Khan succeeded in defeating Hemu in the famous battle of Panipat. This made Akbar the undisputed master of the throne. Akbar was very ambitious. He wanted to bring the whole of India under him. As a result in the 17th century his empire extended to three-fourths of India, Afghanistan and Baluchistan.
Akbar’s empire extended from Bengal in the east to Afghanistan in the north-west and from Himalayas in the north to Godavari River in the east. Akbar was a good administrator. His liberal religious policies won the hearts of millions of people. He abolished the pilgrim tax and the jaziya tax which were prevalent at that time. He also founded a religion called Din-I-Illa hi to unite the people of all the religions.
Though Babar was the first ruler and also the founder of Mughal dynasty, Akbar is said to be the real founder of Mughal Empire. Akbar died in 1605.  He ruled from 1556 to 1605. His rule was glorious. Thus it is correct to add the acronym great to his name.
